In 21st Century, When we think about any cooking oils, the options which comes in our mind is "Refined Oils / Vanaspati Ghee" and the one we mostly miss is "Filtered Oils".
Filtered Oils may be a new oil for 21st Century but it`s well known to our ancestors and was consumed as most preferred cooking oil. At present Filtered oils is being exported from INDIA to other countries as premium cooking oil and on other hand, domestically in INDIA we are importing and consuming a huge quantity of various inferior oils namely Palm Oil / Soyabean Oil / Rapeseed Oil promoted as (Canola Oil) and these oils contribution is around 80% of INDIA`s Annual Total Consumption of Cooking Oils.
Now a question should arises, when we are importing around 80% of our total annual consumption, then why other countries are importing our domestic cooking oils for their use.
Let`s try to understand the difference between Filtered & Refined Oils through Flowchart.
Filtered Oils
As you can see in the flowchart, you will notice that there is no use and need of any chemicals in preparing filtered oils at any level. Only mechanical use of expeller machine or kolhu machine is used to extract the oil from seed and cloth filter machine is used to filter the oil, and the cake (Khal) received from this process is the best diet for our dairy animals, but in animal feed also, we have achieved modernization more than the requirement, as we have started extracting oil from the cake (Khal) by a-lot of chemical process to make refined oils and what left over is De-oiled cake (DOC) which is further sent to cattle feed industry to prepare feed for cattles.
Refined Oils
As you can see in the flowchart, you will notice that oil is sent to refinery which is received after mechanically pressing of seed, where it will be converted to refined oil by using bleaching earth to reduce color of oil and deodorised at high temprature to remove natural essence of oil, next you will note extraction of oil from cake (Khal), it is process done in solvent industry, here the hexane a petroleum product is used to extract the oil from cake and then solvent extracted oil is further sent to refinery for refining / bleaching and deodorising the oil to make refined oil.
The best ever suited cooking oils for humanity since the beginning of civilization is filtered oils and Oiled cake for our dairy animal.
